Lyfe Jennings Rises With 'The Phoenix' Friday, 14 April 2006 Guitar-carrying soulster Lyfe Jennings is preparing to drop his eagerly anticipated sophomore album in August. The Phoenix will offer more insightful music and lyrics from the thoughtful singer/songwriter who openly discusses his life as an ex-con. The title refers to being able to transform oneself through hard times. After spending a decade behind bars for his part in an arson crime, Jennings uses his own life story as inspiration for others. "I just picked up where I left off and told a story," he said. "I think that's what happens to everybody. You get stuck in the ashes and you come through. This is just another situation in my life where I came through the fire." The title of Jennings 2004 debut Lyfe 268-192 was also significant as it was his inmate number he wore while serving his time. Lead by the soulful single "Must Be Nice," the set went on to stay on the Billboard charts for over a year. The Phoenix features an updated version of 2Pac's classic "Keep Ya Head Up," as well as the live instrumentation fans have grown to expect.
