The Red Sox announced Friday they have designated third basemen Pablo
Sandoval for assignment.

Sandoval, 30, notoriously signed a nightmare five-year, $95 million contract
with the Red Sox in 2014, and gravely underperformed since his Giants heyday.

The two-time All Star played just 161 games in two-and-a-half injury-plagued
seasons for the Sox, failing to come even close to compensating Boston for
the dollars they committed to him after seven more or less productive years
with the Giants.

Following a disappointing debut season with Boston, Sandoval showed up to
spring training in 2016 looking woefully out of shape. Despite his weight
concerns, he vowed to quiet the doubters with his bat and glove. That

He lost his starting third base job to Travis Shaw and played just three
games before having season-ending shoulder surgery.
