Real Madrid striker Morientes has been strongly linked with a move to Merseyside for some time. The Reds were hoping to tie up a permanent deal for the Spanish international but the clubs have not been able to agree a price. Real were hoping all of the ￡12 million they paid Liverpool for Michael Owen this summer. Morientes, 28, has struggled to hold down a regular place at the Bernabeu and has yet to score for Madrid this season. But he was top scorer in the Champions League last season when he was loaned out to Monaco.
