According to Stephen Nohlgren of the Tampa Bay Times, the club will have to make payments to the city if they leave Tropicana Field before their lease expires in 2017. Here's more from Nohlgren: Payments would be based on how many years would remain on the Trop lease if the Rays left, starting at $4 million a season until December 2018, dropping to $3 million a season from 2019 to 2022 and $2 million from 2023 through 2026. The Rays have been seeking a new stadium location for years but have been stymied due to their lease agreement with the city. Getting on the other side of the bay will make the team more accessible to fans in Tampa, Orlando and the surrounding areas. Tropicana Field is in St. Petersburg, roughly 20 minutes away from downtown Tampa, and that's without traffic. Getting to the ballpark for a night game is not easy with rush hour traffic and attendance suffers. A new park in a better location is basically a necessity for the long-term health of the franchise. --
