Rangers, Adrian Beltre on verge of deal that could be worth $96 million http://0rz.tw/mbdHo The Rangers, according to sources familiar with the negotiations, are on the brink of a deal with Adrian Beltre on a long-term deal that could keep him in Texas for six years. Officially, the deal will be reported as a six-year deal worth $96 million, but the last year of the contract is voidable if Beltre doesn't reach certain plate appearance thresholds either in the fifth year or over the last two years. The first five years of the deal will be worth $80 million. The contract is set up similarly to the contract the Rangers did with Kevin Millwood, who, like Beltre, is represented by Scott Boras. While the deal is reported as a six-year contract, it offers the club protection against a traumatic injury or marked decline in performance. The deal is still not official because Beltre must undergo a physical and the Rangers must clear roster space. The Rangers aren't likely to officially confirm it until after Beltre's physical. Beltre would give the Rangers a two-time Gold Glove winner at third base and would push Michael Young to a DH/super utility role. By agreeing to move to the role on Monday, Young may have cut the Rangers off from trying to deal him to another team on the eight-team list of clubs to which he can't block a trade. He does, however, have a reputation for being a "contract-year" performer, whose numbers spike greatly when he is playing for a free agent deal contract.
