Hamilton, Andrus win GIBBY hardware AL MVP named Majors' best; shortstop honored for defense ARLINGTON -- Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton has collected another award for his trophy case while shortstop Elvis Andrus has been honored for his defensive work. Hamilton has been selected as the Player of the Year in the 2010 This Year in Baseball Awards. The announcement was made on MLB Network on Friday Night. Hamilton, who has already been named the Most Valuable Player of the American League, hit .359 with 32 home runs and 100 RBIs. He led the league in batting average and slugging percentage and was second in on-base percentage in leading the Rangers to their first World Series appearance in franchise history. Hamilton was selected over nine other finalists: Joey Votto, Jose Bautista, Carlos Gonzalez, Albert Pujols, Carl Crawford, Adrian Beltre, Paul Konerko, Miguel Cabrera and Robinson Cano. Andrus was selected as the Defensive Player of the Year for his brilliant play at shortstop. He beat out nine other nominees: Michael Bourn, Carl Crawford, Franklin Gutierrez, Yadier Molina, Placido Polanco, Mark Teixeira, Troy Tulowitzki, Ryan Zimmerman and Pujols. Andrus ranked fourth among shortstops in the American League in fielding percentage and total chances per nine innings but was a regular on the highlight films with the plays that he made behind his pitchers. This year's winners for the GIBBY Awards, the ultimate "This Year in Baseball" honor for the best players and must-see moments from the 2010 Major League Baseball season, were determined through a comprehensive eight-week voting process that included national and local media members, Major League club front-office personnel, former Major League players and online fan balloting at MLB.com.
