Southpaw sprains knee, while cut finger shuts down righty
SURPRISE, Ariz. -- This is not a good time for a pitcher to start
falling behind in Rangers camp. There are too many pitchers competing
for the few jobs that are available.
Derek Holland and Doug Mathis both know that, but they are in jeopardy
of getting off to a slow start because of a couple of early injuries.
Both are deemed minor right now.
Holland had to drop out of Saturday morning's workout after spraining
his right knee doing agility drills. The initial plan was to send him
for an MRI exam, but the Rangers will likely wait until Monday.
"I'm not too worried about it," Holland said. "It's something minor."
Mathis is dealing with a cut on the middle finger of his right hand. The
injury occurred while throwing batting practice on Friday, and Mathis
thinks he cut himself with his thumb while throwing a pitch.
"I looked down and there was blood on my finger," Mathis said.
"[Pitching coach Mike] Maddux looked at it and said, 'All right, you're
shut down.'"
Mathis played catch without any problems on Saturday and will likely try
throwing in the bullpen on Sunday.
