Young strains hamstring, exits Game 2 Rangers third baseman replaced before fourth, set for MRI By T.R. Sullivan / MLB.com 09/01/09 9:42 PM ET ARLINGTON -- Rangers third baseman Michael Young could be sidelined for an extended period of time after suffering a strained left hamstring in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Blue Jays. Young will have an MRI on the injury on Wednesday, but it could keep him sidelined for 1-2 weeks or more. "I've never had a hamstring issue before in my life, so it's a little bit of a shock," Young said. "At this point of the season, missing one pitch kills me. It's pretty tough, but I'm not going to pout about it. It happens. I'm going to try and get back as quickly as possible." Rangers manager Ron Washington, who first described it as a "pulled" muscle, admitted it was not a good situation. "We'll know tomorrow," Washington said. "We'll wait and see how he recovers." Young injured himself trying to run out an inning-ending ground ball in the bottom of the third inning. Young immediately left the field. There wasn't much optimism in the clubhouse that this was a minor injury. "I don't have a lot of answers," Young said. "I'm going to be as aggressive with my treatment and get back on the field as quickly as possible." Omar Vizquel will likely replace him at third. He started at short in the second game -- which the Rangers won, 5-2, for a twin-bill sweep of the Jays -- but moved to third when Young left the game. Elvis Andrus, who did not start the game, took over at shortstop. Vizquel was making his eighth appearance at third base this season. He has only started there twice and never played there before in his career before signing with the Rangers. But in the sixth inning, he made a tremendous diving stop to his right and threw out John McDonald from his knees. "Nothing surprises me what Omar does," Washington said. "He's a baseball player. It doesn't matter where he is on the field, his glove is like a vacuum." Young entered the night with an 18-game hitting streak, but that came to an end in the first game when he went 0-for-2 with two walks. That also ended a 23-game home hitting streak that was tied for the second longest by a Ranger at the Ballpark in Arlington. But now it's a matter of how many consecutive games he's going to miss.
