The Rangers needed Doug Mathis to step in as the starter Tuesday night because Vicente Padilla was still feeling the effects of the swine flu. That forced the Rangers to make a move to add a long reliever to the bullpen, recalling right-handed pitcher Guillermo Moscoso from Triple-A Oklahoma City. To make room for Moscoso, the Rangers optioned right-hander Willie Eyre to Oklahoma City. Calling up Moscoso for the third time did little to clear up health issues for the starting rotation. After Scott Feldman tonight, the probable starters get cloudy. Vicente Padilla could start Thursday if he's healthy. If not, left-hander Derek Holland would probably start as planned. Kevin Millwood is expected to start Friday, but he's still being bothered by a tight left gluteus muscle. He could be pushed back as well, which could throw Dustin Nippert back into the starting mix. Millwood played catch Tuesday and will throw a bullpen session today if he feels better. Holland getting close: Holland knows what Rangers fans are saying about him. He's heard he needs to develop secondary pitches and that he struggles when he faces a batter for the second time in a game. Holland isn't buying it. "I've been trying to do too much," said Holland, who is 1-5 as a starter. "The thing that gets me is that everybody thinks I need to develop more off-speed. It's more about locating. It's always been just one pitch." Francisco trying to stay upbeat: Closer Frank Francisco's first two stints on the disabled list this season were a little easier to tolerate. Arm problems come with the territory for a pitcher. But a mild case of pneumonia? "I don't even want to talk about it," Francisco said. "It's been really, really hard. But you've got to deal with it." Francisco has been on the disabled list since July 11 because of the illness, but he could return soon. Francisco threw a bullpen session Monday and could throw batting practice today. The Rangers will then have to decide whether to send him on a rehab assignment. Harrison undergoes surgery: Left-hander Matt Harrison underwent surgery Monday for his thoracic outlet syndrome. The surgery was performed by Dr. Greg Pearl, who did a similar procedure on first baseman Hank Blalock in 2007. Harrison opted to have the surgery after talking with his agent, his family and the team. He will miss the rest of the season.
