Hamilton set for rehab assignment Slugger to be DH for Double-A Frisco on Monday By T.R. Sullivan / MLB.com 06/28/09 8:28 PM ET ARLINGTON -- Josh Hamilton is beginning a medical rehabilitation assignment with Double-A Frisco on Monday. Hamilton is scheduled to be the Roughriders' designated hitter in their 7:05 p.m. CT game on Monday against Corpus Christi at Dr. Pepper Ballpark in Frisco. It is the Roughriders' last game before the Texas League All-Star break. The plan is for Hamilton to play the entire game on Monday at designated hitter, then work out with the Rangers on Tuesday in Arlington. On Wednesday, he'll join Triple-A Oklahoma City when the RedHawks open a three-game series with the Iowa Cubs in Des Moines. Hamilton will play in the outfield for the RedHawks. "We'll take it day-by-day from there," general manager Jon Daniels said. Hamilton could be activated as early as Saturday against the Rays. The Rangers also may wait for the following Monday when they open a three-game series against the Angels in Anaheim. Hamilton has been on the disabled list since June 2 and underwent surgery on June 9 to repair a torn muscle in his abdomen. He is now at the point where he is going through full workouts before Rangers games and nothing seems to bother him. "They've been wearing me out and I've been staying with it so far," Hamilton said. "I feel really good." Hamilton has missed 38 of the Rangers' first 73 games. He first was out with a bruised muscle in his left rib cage that had him on the disabled list for the first two weeks of May and now is dealing with the torn abdomen muscle. He is hitting .240 with six home runs and 24 RBIs in 125 at-bats. The Rangers also went without Nelson Cruz for a second straight game in the starting lineup. Cruz has one hit in his past 22 at-bats and is hitting .143 in his past 18 games, so manager Ron Washington wanted to give him a couple of days off. "Nelson is fine, I just wanted to give him a couple of days to get some work in," Washington said. "He'll be back in there tomorrow. He has been grinding so I felt a couple of days would do him good. When we got off that roadtrip he looked a little fatigued. We're going to need him in this stretch leading up to the All-Star break, so I felt like I needed to give him a mental break." T.R.
