A meeting at owner Tom Hicks' house on Tuesday night was one of the highlights for Trey Hillman as he interviewed for the Rangers managerial opening. Hillman, an Arlington native who served as director of player development for the Rangers in 2002, spent Tuesday afternoon with general manager Jon Daniels and his assistant Thad Levine in Arlington, then had dinner with Hicks, his son Tom Jr. and Daniels in Dallas. "I enjoyed my time with J.D. and Thad very much," Hillman said Wednesday morning before boarding a flight to Oakland. "These guys are very organized, and they are very detailed. They have a real good idea of where they want to go. J.D. is really sincere about wanting to build something strong here and build it quickly." He will be the fifth and final candidate interviewed to replace Buck Showalter, who was let go at the end of the season. Hillman said he was fortunate that the Fighters allowed him to leave Japan to interview for these positions face-to-face instead of over the telephone. Hillman has to be back for an All-Star game on Sunday and to manage the Fighters in the Asian Games on Nov. 12. "I told Mr. Hicks that I didn't like my chances if I don't get to meet face-to-face with them," Hillman said. "Regardless of what happens over the next 72 hours, this has been a wonderful experience getting to meet with three Major League organizations.
