He made less than $3 million while on the roster (about $1 million of which will be made back because Francisco Cordero entered arbitration without a full year as a closer under his belt), and the Rangers managed to trade him for Gonzalez, the first overall pick in the 2000 draft. Gonzalez had his problems last year after undergoing offseason wrist surgery, but he bounced back in the AFL and should be 100 percent this year. In a best-case scenario , Gonzalez will have a John Olerud-type career. At worst, he’ll be Doug Mientkiewicz. Expect the Rangers to prepare him for a starting job in 2005 by breaking him in during August or September. 84. Juan Dominguez - RHP Rangers - Age 23 - ETA: July 2004 Previous rankings: None 4-0, 2.84 ERA, 55 H, 72/16 K/BB in 63 1/3 IP for Single-A Stockton 5-0, 2.60 ERA, 35 H, 54/21 K/BB in 55 1/3 IP for Double-A Frisco 1-0, 3.50 ERA, 15 H, 14/3 K/BB in 18 IP for Triple-A Oklahoma 0-2, 7.16 ERA, 16 H, 13/12 K/BB in 16 1/3 IP for Texas After going 10-0 in the minors, Dominguez was called up to the majors last August. It was then revealed that his name was Juan, not Jose, and he was two years older than his listed 21. Fortunately, nothing changed about his low-90s fastball and his outstanding changeup. Control issues prevented Dominguez from having any success in the majors, but he’ll get another chance after spending a couple of more months in Triple-A. The Rangers have him focusing on improving his slider. If he comes up with a decent one , he’ll be a No. 3 starter. 88. He showed promise at the new position, but since he still needs more experience, he won’t receive too much consideration for a job on Opening Day. Nivar is primarily a singles hitter right now , but he is a very good one and he should add more doubles. He’ll probably be an average regular for the Rangers.
