I ran a tclsh to test what you said.
> tclsh
% exec ls
a.out
src
tmp
% set r [exec ls]
a.out
src
tmp
% echo $r
a.out
src
tmp
It looks like work fine for me. So, I am not sure why you cannot do the
same thing.
