The Pistons officially signed Greg Monroe to a four-year contract Tuesday, days before Monroe and various other young players begin competing in the annual NBA summer league in Las Vegas. According to the collective bargaining agreement, Monroe, as the seventh overall pick in the draft, can earn a salary of $2.3 million in the first year of a four-year deal (or 80 to 120 percent of that figure), with approximately a $200,000 increase the second year. The third and fourth years of the contract are the team's option. Monroe, 6-foot-11, averaged 16.1 points, 9.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.5 blocks and 1.2 steals in 34 games at Georgetown last season. "We feel good about our draft and obviously we're thrilled to get Greg in the fold," said Scott Perry, Pistons vice-president of basketball operations. The Pistons made no secret of wanting size and skill in the frontcourt before the draft and getting Monroe where the team was drafting was considered a coup by many analysts. Monroe is generally considered to be a fine passer, has good basketball sense, and is a strong rebounder. Most scouts, heading into the draft, wanted to see more tenacity out of Monroe, a little more consistent shot, and better conditioning. The Pistons, though, liked what they saw, and continue to see, since they've drafted Monroe. "He's a very skilled player," Perry said. "A very smart player. He's a high character guy. We've happy to have him."
