But after Game 1, the only thing the Bulls are full of is doubt. A beatdown like the one the Pistons gave them has to concern Scott Skiles and his players and will clearly have an impact on every game they play until they win one. Detroit was masterful in its execution, on both sides of the ball. The Pistons ran everything from post-ups for all five starters to cuts off the pinch-post entry to clear-outs for Chauncey Billups, to their typical "Detroit" action for Richard Hamilton coming free off of screens. And that was all in the first quarter. Their main focus was to post up anyone Ben Gordon was guarding and post up Luol Deng if he got caught guarding a big. Chris Duhon came in for Gordon, and they immediately posted him up. Chicago must consider helping each other inside more than they did in Game 1. And the Bulls' overall defensive awareness was poor, leaving open shooters like Rasheed Wallace in the half court and Hamilton in transition. Although Detroit executed well, it was not Chicago's defense that fell totally flat, it was the Bulls offense and bench that lead to their demise. Chicago committed 21 turnovers, which led to 18 Pistons points. And when the Bulls went to their bench, disaster struck. Between them, Andres Nocioni and Tyrus Thomas had nine turnovers in 37 minutes. They combined for only seven points on 2 for 13 shooting, and the entire Chicago bench shot a shocking 3-for-30. Detroit pressured ball-handlers and denied important spots on the floor, so the Bulls have to be much stronger with the ball and consider limiting touches for Thomas and Nocioni. Gordon struggled mightily as well, forcing the issue when he returned from sitting with two early fouls. He finished 2-for-9, meaning he and Nocioni shot 3-for-17 and a combined 1-for-9 from 3-point land. In general, the Bulls played "too fast" while the Pistons played "just right." If the Bulls focus on making easy plays in Game 2, their execution will improve and their turnovers will decrease. Look for Detroit to continue to mix in zone and man looks, helping to throw the Bulls off balance. If Chicago can regain the attitude and edge it had in playing Miami, then it can steal Game 2. Finding Deng more often when the team is mired in a shooting slump would help, too -- he and Kirk Hinrich both have their shooting stroke intact. They must do a better job of clearing Rasheed Wallace and Chris Webber out of the paint after a shot so that they cannot tip out misses to teammates on the perimeter. Detroit has a strong focus, but has been susceptible in previous years to casual play when they feel they the better team in a series. That would be a mistake in this series, as Chicago is capable of beating the Pistons. For now, though, the Pistons look like a team on a mission, with excellent defense and a balanced offensive attack.
