Concerto No.5 also differs considerably in the version recorded here, which is taken from a set of parts copied by Bach's pupil Altnickol. The Brandenburg version has (in addition to be a number of added ornamental details) a slightly longer final movement, and, more drastically, a vastly expanded solo harpsichord episode towards the end of the first movement. Bach's reason for introducing such a hold-up in the momentum of the music is not clear, unless he was perhaps showing off the capabilities of the new harpsichord from Berlin; the shorter version recorded here seems like less of an intrusion . -- to be continued --
