Textbooks were usually quite expensive there. For those important and fundamental textbooks, the libraries would have a couple of copies, but usually for short-term loan only. The lecturers don't usually set a single textbook and run the course on the track of the book. What they usually did were abstracting different parts from several textbooks to make the main contents, plus the knowledge, research achievements or results found or discovered in the department/group. It is quite usual for postgraduate courses. Therefore, there would be no fixed textbooks but reference lists, photocopied handouts or lecture notes are possible. Students may require to access the textbooks in the library to find more details, but they are not expected to keep one copy at home. This seems to be quite messy, as all the lecture notes from different books; however, this is the most efficient method to learn a lot of knowledge relating to a specific area, particularly for young researchers or students without the whole view of that area or subject. Why you pay tuition fee to attend your course? Are you paying money for learning a lot of knowledge, or doing a lot of works, reading a lot of textbooks for somebody? If you are the people paying the money, you got to think about this for your own sakes. Surely, to prepare a lecture by this way would be a significant load for the lecturers, particular in their first year. However, this is their job and the reason why they get so high payment and receive respects from the students. There is no excuse for them not to do this duty. : 然後說 這本課本我自己也很想讀 但是沒有時間 : 這學期 我們就一起把這本書讀完吧 : 然後就開始分配 多少人準備一章 以及報告時間等等 : 這樣的教授其實也不錯啦 : 會讓學生拼了命去準備 Have you ever thought, if three or four lecturers do this job in a term and unfortunately you have taken all of them. Have you got time to do all of them? Are they going to make you learnt a lot of knowledge or eventually ruin your time management and ruin your other courses? On the other hand, when you get more and more professional, you might realise there might be no textbook whose whole contents are all necessary to read to do your research. Therefore, advices from the lecturers about which part you got to read is quite essentially, at least to save your time. Conversely, if a lecturer does that lazy job and that guy has never read that book. This means you have risks to read some chapters which are totally not related to your topics. This still not yet counts in those mistakes in the books. Impossible? Just believe me, there are usually more mistakes in very professional books than fundamental undergraduate textbooks. You would be able to judge it if you are quite professional in this area, however, this is not usually the case of postgraduate students. Certainly, postgraduate students have to receive some training of reading and abstracting from some previous works. However, this should not be the most important task in a module. This supposes to be done under individual supervision and targeting at some specific research topics. If you do this based on a single textbook, you are not going to learn research. --
