Starting point guard Baron Davis is expected to come off the list next week, so Garcia will be permitted to fill his spot, Bristow said. Garcia is out for the season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during last Sunday's 88-69 loss to the Washington Wizards. Davis has been on the injured list since Nov. 17 because of an inflamed disc in his lower back and missed his 17th consecutive game when the Hornets lost to the San Antonio Spurs 83-67 on Friday night at New Orleans Arena. Initially, Bristow thought he would have to release a player on the active roster to make room for Davis. And before speaking to league officials, Bristow had said he didn't think the team would get another exemption because every player on the list must be medically cleared to miss at least two weeks. Davis is not scheduled to miss another two weeks. "With the league letting us do it that way, it gives us a little more flexibility," Bristow said. Magloire (fractured right ring finger), West (right knee), Rodney Rogers (sprained left knee) and Jamal Mashburn (right knee) are on the injured list with Davis. Under league rules, a team can place only three players on the injured list if an exemption is not approved. Bristow said the Hornets had to submit a doctors report in their application, which had to be reviewed by a doctor hired by the league to determine if the injury required the specified amount of time to be sidelined. Hornets coach Byron Scott said he plans to evaluate Davis at today's practice and on the road Monday in Sacramento before determining when he might return. Davis participated in the team's morning shoot-around Friday at the Arena. BACK IN ACTION: Forward Lee Nailon returned after missing the past four games with a strained left groin. Scott said Nailon had a good workout Thursday, which prompted his return. Nailon entered the game with 7:24 remaining in the first quarter, and he quickly made his first shot. He finished with 14 points in the first half after scoring 10 in the second quarter. He ended with a game-high 22 points. GOOD START: The Hornets held the Spurs to 16 points and 35-percent shooting during the first quarter. Spurs All- Star forward Tim Duncan missed five of his first seven shots and was held to four points in the quarter. The Hornets made 10 of 20 shots and took a 21-16 lead into the second quarter. NO FEAR: For most of the game, the Hornets weren't afraid to challenge the Spurs on driving shots in the post. In the third quarter, P.J. Brown went strong, but Duncan blocked his shot. At the start of the fourth quarter, backup center Chris Andersen made a quick post move to beat Robert Horry for a layup. QUICK SHOTS: The Spurs did not allow a fast-break basket . . . . The Hornets trailed 44-38 at halftime, the 17th time in 22 games they have trailed at the break. Point guard Junior Harrington had a miserable time shooting, making two of 12 shots for four points. . . . Backup guard Dan Dickau also struggled, making two of seven shots for seven points.
