Bristow said they have targeted a center from the Continental Basketball Association. "We will identify who it is once we can get approval," Bristow said before Wednesday's game. Under league rules, teams can only put three players on the injured list, and the Hornets already have starting point guard Baron Davis (inflamed disc in back), forward Rodney Rogers (sprained left knee) and forward Jamal Mashburn (knee) on the list. That prompted the Hornets to make an exemption request to the league after it was determined Monday that Magloire would miss up to three months because of a fractured right ring finger. The Hornets have only 10 players available to play. Magloire was injured during the final minute in Friday's loss to the Phoenix Suns. His finger will be in a splint for eight weeks before undergoing an additional four weeks of rehabilitation. Coach Byron Scott said he hopes the Hornets can land a backup center who can quickly adapt to his offense. "If he's a basketball player with a 6-foot-9 or 6-10 body who loves to bang and be a little physical, that wouldn't hurt, either," Scott said. "Obviously, we have to find another big body." P.J. Brown, who normally starts at power forward, has played center the past four games, and second-year player David West has started at power forward since Magloire's injury. MISERABLE QUARTER: The Hornets have not had much success during the second quarter. It only got worse in their 94-81 loss to the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday night at New Orleans Arena. The Hornets missed nine consecutive field-goal attempts, committed four turnovers and were outscored 19-0 during a seven-minute stretch in the second quarter. The Hornets missed 22 of 27 shots and were outscored 27-11. The Kings trailed 23-21 at the start of the quarter but took a 17-point lead in the period, and led 48-34 at halftime. SHOOTING SLUMP: Guard Darrell Armstrong has not been able to shake a shooting slump in the past two games. He went through a stretch against the Kings where he missed nine consecutive shots. He finished 2-of-14 for four points -- lowest among the starters. In Monday's loss to the Denver Nuggets, Armstrong went 3-of-14 from the field for eight points. ROOKIE ADJUSTMENT: Rookie guard J.R. Smith has played in 12 of 14 games. He had averaged playing six minutes the past three games entering Wednesday. Scott said he gave Smith limited minutes until Wednesday night because of his defensive struggles. "The mistakes that he is making defensively are costing us points," Scott said earlier this week. "Right now, we can't afford to give up points on mistakes. If teams are going to make baskets on us, it's got to be against good, solid defense. "Rook (Smith) just has to learn the most important part of his game has to be on the defensive end." Scott said he has gone through film-review sessions with Smith to point out mistakes. Scott said one of Smith's problems is defending for the duration of possessions, but he is making progress. "I've just got to work harder and know where the ball is at all times to be in the right spots to help my teammates," Smith said. "A lot of guys have been helping me, and I've been watching David Wesley. It is a time process to get everything down."
