No offer yet has stirred his interest enough to make a deal, but he plans to continue making calls and monitoring which players around the league are on the trading block. "I talk almost every day with somebody, trying to keep abreast of what's going on," Bristow said Monday from his office. "I'm trying to see if anything makes sense. But just to make a trade, and not necessarily making you better, I don't think we're going to do anything like that. "If we can make our team better, we will make a trade. You always look to improve your club." Bristow did not give a timetable, but he is looking to land a post player who can play as a backup power forward and center. He's also monitoring players who have been waived by teams. If the Hornets sign a free agent, they would have to release a player to make room. "I think what we need for practice is another big guy," Bristow said. "I think that's just obvious. We have four guys right now, and it would be nice to have five. One of the things we talked about is not wearing our big guys out in practice." Starting center Jamaal Magloire is averaging 31.8 minutes a game, and backup Chris Andersen is averaging 15.7. At power forward, P.J. Brown is averaging 33.3 minutes per game, but second-year backup David West has struggled to grasp Coach Byron Scott's system. West is averaging only 12.4 minutes a game and 3.6 points. West averaged 3.8 points as a rookie. Scott said he speaks with Bristow every day on a number of topics, including the possibility of adding a player to the roster through a trade. "With Baron (Davis) and Rodney Rogers being out (with injuries), obviously we're going to have conversations about guys you want to try and maybe bring in here," Scott said. The Hornets are off to their worst start in franchise history with six consecutive losses. More bad news came Monday when Scott said the chances are slim that Davis, who has an inflamed disc in his lower back, will return within a week. Scott said Davis' recovery is expected to take several weeks. Davis, the Hornets' leading scorer at 24.6 points a game, injured his back during the fourth quarter of Friday's loss to the Atlanta Hawks after taking a 3-point shot. Veteran Darrell Armstrong is now the starter with Alex Garcia and Junior Harrington, who came off the injured list on Saturday, available as backups. Rogers, who signed this summer as a free agent, is on the injured list and is expected to miss the next four to six weeks with a sprained left knee. "It makes it tougher because Baron is our All-Star point guard and we're already struggling to score points," Bristow said. "To take him out of the lineup sort of puts a lot of pressure on where we're going to get those points. "But we did carry three point guards on our roster, so it's not like we have to play someone out of position. It's just that we've lost our best player for a while. All we can do is see how things go." Armstrong doesn't think the team has to make a trade to improve. "I just feel we have enough talent to win, but we'll have to play almost perfect every night," Armstrong said. That's one reason why Bristow is on the phone looking for help. . . . . . . .
