Brown squarely in middle of team's victory
Forward plays center as Hornets top Clippers

LAFAYETTE Throughout training camp and into the Hornets'
exhibition season, Coach Byron Scott has experimented with
playing forward P.J. Brown at center.
On Saturday night at the Cajundome, just two hours south of
Brown's native Winnfield, a set of injuries earned Brown his
first start in the post since his playing days at Louisiana
Tech.
All-Star center Jamaal Magloire slightly turned his left ankle
in Friday's exhibition loss at Chicago, rendering him out for
Saturday's 105-95 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers in
front of a crowd of 6,076.
And backup center Chris Andersen, signed as free-agent relief
for Magloire, had back spasms, keeping him sidelined, as well.
"I don't remember the last time I started at center," said Brown,
35, the second-oldest member of the team. "Not in Miami (where
Brown played for four seasons). And not in New Jersey (where
Brown played his first three years).
"College, I guess. Back to my roots."
Ordinarily amenable to just about anything that comes his way,
Brown has expressed no displeasure these past two weeks about
the prospect of taking on added responsibility in New Orleans'
newly implemented Princeton offense, even if it meant learning
a new position while perfecting the one to which he's accustomed.
Saturday night's state of affairs afforded the Hornets a perfect
opportunity to thrust Brown into a starting role, and see Brown's
backup at power forward, second-year pro David West, play some at
the five position.
"They want me to work on it, anyway, try to become familiar with
it," Brown said of playing in the middle. "I'm trying to learn
the four and the five. I think I've got the four down. This will
just give me a little more experience trying to learn the five.
"I don't have a problem with it. It means playing a little bit
more, but I should have some fun."
In Brown, a 6-foot-11 veteran who prides himself more on rebounding
and defending than scoring, Scott feels he has someone who can
bring all three components off the wing and into the paint.
"He's very capable of scoring," Scott said.
And Brown showed that capability several ways against the Clippers.
On back-to-back second-quarter possessions, Brown scored successive
baskets, first on a 20-foot jump shot from the top of the key
followed by a breakaway layup off a pass from Baron Davis.
Working against Clippers post men Chris Wilcox, Chris Kaman,
Mikki Moore and Elton Brand, Brown scored 15 points in 25 minutes,
spread almost evenly inside and outside on 5-of-6 shooting, with
five rebounds, a steal and a blocked shot.
He played 25 minutes, after a 31-minute outing Friday night in Chicago
West has not been exposed to much of the playbook for the
center position, which limited the Hornets' offensive options
when he was in the game at that spot. Splitting time between
forward and center, West had eight points and five rebounds.
