We kind of let the guys go at each other a little bit in a game-like situation and after just sitting here refereeing and watching, I thought we showed some really good signs, after three or four days, on the offensive end. I think what we’re going everyday as far as repetition and making sure we go over it is starting to pay off and I think that guys are starting to get a pretty good grasp of what we want to do. The white team did a heck of a job and the black team came back and started playing a little bit better. I think overall it was a very, very good practice. (on if he’s ready to get out of practice mode and start playing games) Not yet. We’ve got a couple of more days of trying to put some things in and trying to re-define some things as well. The guys are getting a little antsy. They’d like to play against somebody else but I think right now it’s still a work in progress. We’ve still got a lot of things that we want to put in. I’m trying to stay away from putting in a whole bunch of stuff until they really start to understand what we’re doing right now before I move into the next phase. (on how the players are holding up) Guys are doing well. No major injuries. Guys are just talking about some minor soreness and things like that but overall we’re in very, very good shape right now. So far these guys have been up to task. They’ve done everything. I’ve been very proud of the first four days because they’ve worked extremely hard. (on if he worries about running them too much) Not really. I think right now what we’re trying to do is lay the foundation. We’re just trying to get everybody in tip-top shape so when the season starts, guys are going to play a certain amount of minutes anyway. I’m not going to play Baron 40 minutes a game. I’m not going to play Darrell Armstrong 20-something minutes a game. I want to try to keep these guys as fresh as possible which means that other guys are going to have to step up as well. I’ve got in my mind a certain amount of time that I’m going to play all of these individuals and I’m going to try to keep it to that if possible. I think if I can do it then I can save these guys from wear and tear. (on when he starts gearing towards the first preseason game) I’m always gearing towards next week. When your first preseason game is next Wednesday, you always start looking at that calendar and start counting the days. I know tomorrow’s Saturday because I don’t have to get up early and take my son to school. You start gearing towards that day everyday as far as I’m concerned because the things that I’m putting in are things that we’re going to run and things that we’re going to do against Dallas. I’m starting to get ready for them. The only thing that I haven’t put in yet offensively is a zone offense and I haven’t done a zone defense. I know Dallas runs a lot of zone so that’s something that I’ll address the next couple of days just so we’re not surprised as a team if they do happen to go zone. (on if all of the offense will be in by Wednesday) No. Not even close but then again we’re talking preseason. I’m not going to run everything anyway. There are just going to be certain things that I’m going to run in the preseason because I don’t want every team we’re playing to scout us for the regular season. I’m going to keep it real simple during the preseason but everyday in practice, all the stuff that we’ll be putting in will be things that we run when the regular season starts. Right now, I’m just trying to make sure we get real good at this one thing on the offensive end so when the preseason starts, these guys will get a good run at it. (on what he’s looking to gain during the preseason) You’re not looking for wins in the preseason. You’re looking for guys to develop. Cut the minutes real short for the veteran guys and get a lot of these rookies and young guys a lot of playing time to see if they are capable of making the team and capable of helping us this season. It’s not so much about wins and losses. It’s more about finding out what guys can do for us. (on when he’ll make his first cuts) I’ll probably make them tomorrow. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Guard Baron Davis (on the new offense) There is just a lot more movement, a lot more options. I think that the guys are more in tune to the different looks that we have out of it. Right now, it’s really good because we’re gelling early and when there’s new stuff and new information, you’re more receptive to it and the fact that the floor is spaced and everybody gets to touch the ball is a pretty good thing. (on if he feels comfortable with the offense) I feel real comfortable with it, just knowing where all the guys should be and just the different options and the counters off of it. I’m still learning the offense and looking to continue to read the playbooks so I can help when we’re out there working on the plays, we don’t have to stop and go over it. We can kind of breeze through it. (on if the offense is more complicated than in the past) There are a lot more options and more details. You have to really pay attention to detail. It makes you cut and get open and if you want shots, you’ll move so it has everybody moving and the spacing is a lot better. (on if the team is well suited to it) We’re going to get better in it, obviously, as the season progresses. We’ll get a whole lot better. This is just the first week and it looks like everybody here is picking it up pretty well, especially at high speed. We scrimmaged today and kind of used it and I think people got some good looks. The more we continue to get into it, when we don’t have breaks, and have more confidence in it, the more it’s going to turn out good shots for us. (on if it’s the hardest training camp he’s been through) This is definitely the toughest training camp. It’s tough, but it’s going to pay off. Everyday that we come in here, guys are really working hard and we know there are going to be some times when we’re tired but throughout the practices there are no breaks and no times for mental lapses. You have to be sharp in pretty much everything you do and I think that from the first four days, we’ve stuck to our practice plan and everything has been the way it should be and we’re getting better everyday.
