I think they did a heck of a job today. They were in much better condition as a whole than I thought they’d be. I was very happy about that. I put them through it today and just like I told them last night, this is just the start of how it’s going to be as far as practiced is concerned because I expect guys to come out everyday and work hard. Today, that’s what I got. These guys busted their butts today. (on if he was trying to find out who was going to quit and who is going to stay) I had no doubts that nobody would quit. I knew the guys wouldn’t quit. I never even used that word, ‘don’t quit’ , or anything like that. I knew everybody was going to finish. It was just a matter of how well they would be after they finished. It was just a test. It’s a big time test though. It’s a hard drill and the only one that really knew about it was Rodney (Rogers). Everybody else was a little shocked when they saw how much time was left on the clock that we had to go but, like I said, as a group, I thought we did a really good job. (on the little things like tucking shirts in to instill discipline in this team) It’s very important. It is just little things. My philosophy is I’m going to come out here with my shoes tied up and my shirt tucked in and ready to work and I want you guys to be the same way. Discipline is very important to me. I think the great players in this game all have that. If you ask them to touch a line, that’s what they’ll do. They all have that type of discipline and that’s why they’re great. This is no different. I want these guys to have the same type of attitude. (on what he expects from J.R. Smith) At 19 years old, I have no expectations right now. My expectation is that he gets better each day in practice. He had a rough day in the beginning in 5-on-5 because he had to guard David Wesley. So, you’re guarding a veteran who knows all the tricks and David was getting wide open. So it’s staying on top of him (J.R. Smith) in a very positive manner just to get him to understand what this game is all about. It’s going to take him some time. I have no timetable as far as what to expect from him right now. I think he’s going to be a guy that’s going to play a lot in the preseason just so we can see what we’ve got. (on if he has a name for the free throw and running drill they did at the end of practice) No, not really but I think they would probably call it something that begins with the word “Death” because it can kill you. But it’s a great drill. It puts a lot of pressure on guys to make free throws. You make a free throw, you don’t run. It’s as simple as that. You miss or you shoot an airball, you’re going to run a lot and today we ran a lot and they will see it again. ------------------------------------------------------------- Guard Darrell Armstrong (on the first day of practice) It was a great day of practice, everybody pushing each other. Guys were working hard. You’ve got to be out there busting your tail every second. That’s what it’s all about. That’s what it’s like. That’s what I was expecting last year but I didn’t get it like this last year. This year is a whole different story and that’s why I was looking forward to this year. (on the heavy amount of running the first day) The running is always going to be tough but when you look at running, you have to look at it in a positive light. It’s getting you in shape and getting you ready for the season. Practice should be the hardest part of the season. If you practice hard, it makes the games a lot easier. If you’re pushing each other, it’s going to make the games a lot easier. That’s the way it should be. When you get out there on the floor, you’re not thinking. You’re just playing basketball and that’s what I liked about today. Everybody was working their tail off, playing hard against each other and if you can push the next player, it’s not only going to make him better but yourself better as well. (on if it’s the hardest he’s ever worked) Yeah. Training camp was always hard in Orlando. This one welcomed me back because last year was kind of an easy training camp but this year, this is the way I expected it to be. You get sore and you get your soreness out of you and if you’re in shape, you’re not going to get sore but you’re going to get sore from banging and that’s what it’s all about. It was a hard day today. I never went three hours (in practice). I always went two hours and that extra hour is more mental and it’s good because it’s going to teach you late in the game that you’re going to have to use your mental strength and that’s why I think practicing for three hours is definitely good for us. ------------------------------------------------------------- Forward P.J. Brown (on how tired he is after the first day) I’m tired but I feel good. I’ve kind of seen some of this before when I was in Miami so I’m kind of used to it. Maybe some of these other guys had a new experience today but it wasn’t all that bad. I’m not saying that he’s going to come back and kill us tomorrow but I thought it was pretty good today. I saw some good things out of everybody and hopefully we can just keep progressing. (on if this type of training camp is needed) Yeah. He’s saying tuck the shirt in and that’s something new for some of these guys. It’s all about discipline and it’s the small details that can make a big difference. I think if it’s for us to be better, then I’m all for it. I think the rest of these guys will see it as the season goes along. (on any other rules) (Tucking in shirts) is the only one right now. He wants you to be on time, you know, the normal stuff. Come out and work hard and give your best and that’s what it’s been so far. (on the tough camp translating into wins) I think so. I was in a system like this in Miami, which I thought was even more strenuous than this. Coach really laid the hammer down with certain rules that you had to abide by on and off the floor and this is not as extreme as that was, but this is going to be good. I think it’s going to translate into victories for us. I really do. (on the camp being more energetic than in the past) I would think so. I think it’s been a lot of communication. The coaches have really pushed us in the first day and I’ve been here a couple of weeks before working with the guys so they’re very into talking to guys and giving us all the knowledge and really trying to help us be better players and we saw that today on the floor. Today, guys were into it and coaches were saying things when you did something wrong and telling you when you were right and I also saw our team. Everybody was encouraging each other. The veterans were encouraging the young guys and helping them along and we know we’ve got a lot of free agents trying to make this team and it’s a tough time for them but guys are really trying to help them and give them the best shot they can possibly had. (on the free throw shooting drill at the end on practice) At the end of games in the fourth quarter when you’re tired mentally and you go to the line, you see a lot of guys blow free throws at the end and in a tough game, you’re going to need those types of shots and doing it right here in practice, wearing your body down, it just works on you mentally. It’s going to make us mentally tougher. When we’re in that situation in a game, we better make sure we knock them down. --
