Tremaine Fowlkes, who played as a reserve forward on the
Detroit Pistons' championship team last season, was one
of four free agents signed by the Hornets on Wednesday.
Joining Fowlkes are 7-foot center Sean Finn, 6-10
forward Britton Johnsen and 6-11 forward Nate Williams.
Fowlkes, 6 feet 8, averaged 1.2 points and 1.5 rebounds
in 36 games with the Pistons last season. He did not
appear in any playoff games.
Prior to the 2003-04 season, Fowlkes spent two seasons
with the Los Angeles Clippers and averaged 3 points and
2.3 rebounds in 95 games.
With the signing of the four players, Hornets coach Byron
Scott gets closer to his training camp goal of having 17
to 18 players. The Hornets now have 16 on their roster,
and camp opens Tuesday.
"I've always brought in 17 or 18 guys to camp because,
after a couple of days, it's down to 14 to 15 guys anyway
(because of injuries)," Scott said.
Forward Lee Nailon, who played for the Hornets two seasons
ago, has agreed to a contract, his agent, Larry Fox, said.
A team official said Nailon's signing will be announced
later this week.
"One thing that we actually thought of which was very
beneficial was the fact that New Orleans is now moving
into the West," Fox said. "It's a more up-tempo game than
the slow-grinding, East Coast defensive style.
"Lee has familiarity with the team, and the team has
familiarity with him. There is a comfort level, and we know
he fits in with these players. He had success with the
Hornets when they were in the East, going up against teams
like the Pistons with the slow it up, physical style."
Meantime, Johnsen averaged 2.1 points and 2.3 rebounds for
the Orlando Magic last season. Johnsen initially was signed
by the Magic before training camp, but was waived. He
eventually signed two successive, 10-day contracts with the
Magic before sticking for the remainder of the season.
Johnsen also played with the National Basketball
Developmental League's Fayetteville Patriots and averaged
14.6 points and 5.9 rebounds last season.
Finn and Williams are rookies. Finn played at Dayton, and
Williams played at Georgia State.
The Hornets also are looking at Junior Harrington, a 6-2
guard who went undrafted in 2002 but helped the Wingate
basketball team to a school-record 23-win season.
