High School: St. Benedict’s Prep (Newark, N.J.)
An early entry candidate for the 2004 NBA Draft. Originally
committed to play for North Carolina. Named Co-MVP of the
2004 McDonald's High School All-America game along with
fellow draft prospect Dwight Howard. Named Co-MVP of the EA
Sports Roundball Classic along with draft prospect Shaun
Livingston. Began his career at Lakewood High School (N.J.)
before transferring to St. Benedict's Prep, where he gained
an extra year of eligibility to work on academics. Played
for head coach Danny Hurley, who was a star at St. Anthony's
(N.J.) and played college basketball at Seton Hall.
High School Career Highlights: Named First Team All-State as
a junior and senior. Named Second Team All-State as a
sophomore and Third Team as a freshman. Also played football
and baseball in high school.
2004 Postseason All-Star Games: Scored a game-high 25 points
as the East defeated the West 126-96 in the McDonald’s Game.
Connected of 5-of-11 three-pointers and added four rebounds
and five assists. Played for the East squad in the EA Sports
Roundball Classic, tallying 16 points and five steals, as the
West came away with a 124-110 victory. In the Nike Hoop Summit
against top international competition, scored 17 points, as
the USA Select Team rolled to a 99-79 win over the World Select
Team.
Senior (2003-04): Averaged 23.9 points and 5.0 steals. Set
school single-season records for points (700), three-pointers
(108) and field goal percentage (.541). Scored 30 or more
points seven times.
Junior (2002-03): Helped lead St. Benedict's to a 24-3 record
and first-place finish in the state. Averaged 17.8 points, 5.0
rebounds and 2.0 assists.
Sophomore (2001-02): At Lakewood, helped lead his team to a
23-6 record and the South Jersey Group 3 Championship. Averaged
27.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks.
Freshman (2000-01): Helped lead his team to a 20-3 record.
Averaged 17.0 points and 3.0 rebounds.
Strengths: Has a 44-inch vertical leap to go with excellent
range on his jumpshot. An excellent finisher on the break.
Personal: Son of Ioa and Earl Smith. Has three brothers and two
sisters. Favorite sport other than basketball is football. Lists
fellow draft prospect Luol Deng as the best player he's ever
faced. Favorite foot is baked ziti. Favorite basketball announcer
is Dick Vitale. Wears No. 23 because of Michael Jordan.
