The Hornets will announce today that Kenny Gattison will join
Coach Byron Scott's staff as an assistant coach, a team
official said Monday.
Scott, who could not be reached for comment Monday, said eight
days ago that Gattison would be hired.
"Kenny is somebody I trust," Scott said. "His family, Wanda and
my wife, they've known each other for a long time."
Gattison joined the Hornets' staff last season and worked
extensively with center Jamaal Magloire, who made the Eastern
Conference All-Star team for the first time.
Before joining the Hornets, Gattison was an assistant with Old
Dominion, his alma mater. Gattison played nine seasons in the
NBA, including six with the Charlotte Hornets. Gattison and
Scott have been friends since they were teammates with the
Vancouver Grizzlies in 1995-96.
Gattison left the Alario Center on Monday before speaking to
reporters after a predraft workout for prospects.
Scott has two more openings to fill. Scott has spoken to Donald
Newman, a New Orleans native, but Scott said they hadn't reached
a contract agreement. Newman was on Scott's staff this past
season with the New Jersey Nets. Newman previously spent four
seasons as an assistant with the Milwaukee Bucks.
Newman is a former Brother Martin basketball standout who had a
brief professional football career. He did not play in the NBA.
From 1987 to 1992, Newman was an assistant at Washington State
before taking the head coaching job at Sacramento State from 1992
to 1997. He was an interim head coach at Arizona State from
1997-98 before becoming an assistant at Oregon in 1998-99.
Scott also is considering Larry Drew and Lester Conner. Drew was
an assistant with Scott in New Jersey.
EXPANSION DRAFT: The Charlotte Bobcats can select as many as 14
players in today's expansion draft, but they can't select more
than one player from a team.
Under league rules, no team could disclose which player it left
unprotected. League sources indicated that guards Courtney
Alexander and Maurice Carter were left unprotected by the
Hornets. Alexander missed all 82 games this season after
rupturing an Achilles tendon in a preseason game. Carter was
signed at midseason. He played in six regular-season games and
averaged 3.3 points.
PRE-DRAFT WORKOUTS: The Hornets invited UNO guard Kyle Buggs to
a pre-draft workout Monday at the Alario Center. It was Buggs'
first workout with an NBA team.
"I wasn't really expecting it; I kind of got the call out of the
blue," said Buggs, who is considering playing in a foreign
professional league if he is not drafted or does not receive a
free-agent offer.
