Scott, speaking from his Livingston, N.J., home before departing for Los Angeles for his television analyst role with ABC for the NBA Finals, confirmed he's negotiating with Newman and Gattison, but said no contract has been formalized. Scott, who last week signed a three-year deal with the Hornets worth $10 million plus incentives, also said he'll likely add one more assistant to the staff. League sources said Thursday that Larry Drew, who along with Newman was an assistant to Scott with the New Jersey Nets this season, is a possible candidate, as is former Celtics assistant Lester Conner. Sources also indicated that Jan van Breda Kolff and Jeff Bower, assistants under former coach Tim Floyd, are not candidates for the last assistant's position under Scott. Sources said that Bower, who has held a variety of positions with the Hornets from scout to general manager, will join the team's basketball operations staff once the team hires a general manager to replace Bob Bass, who is retiring. Allan Bristow is considered the leading candidate to replace Bass, and said last week he expects he will have a job in the Hornets' front office but would not comment further. Team owner George Shinn confirmed that Bristow will be part of the Hornets' operation, but Shinn said he may hire more than one person and divide Bass' duties. Bower, van Breda Kolff, Newman and Gattison could not be reached for comment Thursday. An official announcement from the Hornets regarding the hires won't be forthcoming until contracts are signed. "When I brought him to Jersey (last summer, after a four-year association with the Milwaukee Bucks), I loved the way he taught the game from the technical standpoint," Scott said of Newman. "There are a lot of different things he can do, and I like the way he can handle almost any situation." Newman was hired by the Nets last August. He had been with Milwaukee as an assistant for four years after being an assistant at Washington State from 1987 to 1992, head coach at Sacramento State from 1992 to 1997, interim head coach at Arizona State in 1997-98 and an assistant at Oregon in 1998-99. Newman did not play in the NBA, but had a brief NFL career with the Seattle Seahawks and New York Jets as well as in the Canadian Football League. Gattison joined the Hornets' staff last season after playing for the team for six years when it was in Charlotte. He was credited with helping center Jamaal Magloire make the Eastern Conference All-Star team for the first time this season. Gattison was an assistant coach at his alma mater, Old Dominion, before joining the Hornets as an assistant last summer. He played nine years in the NBA, including a half-season with Scott with the expansion Vancouver Grizzlies. "Kenny is a mellow guy," Scott said, "but he's also a guy who can be in your face and down your throat if he has to be. With him and Don helping our big guys, I know that Big Cat (Magloire) and P.J.
