http://www.nba.com/hornets/news/quotes_040601.html Draft Workout: June 1, 2004 DORRELL WRIGHT – 6-7, 210 lbs. South Kent Prep School (Connecticut) (on what makes him standout from other players) My work ethic is a big part of it. I try to go out there and go as hard as I can and do the little things. If we got to get water, I'll sprint everywhere. I'm just going to show that I have a good work ethic and I'm going to hustle wherever I go. (on if the fact that he's at workouts and closer to the NBA giving him a bit more motivation) No, I just go out there and try to do what I do and what got me here to be able to compete on this level because I just go out there and go hard at whatever I do. (on his draft status) I'm hearing somewhere mid-first round. (on getting used to the travel) Yeah, I'm getting used to it. I've been doing it for this whole year because I went away from home to Connecticut for Prep School so I'm getting used to going back and forth and traveling all over the world. (on that preparing him for the NBA travel schedule) Hopefully, I'll get my body in shape for that. (on what he's looking to improve) I'm trying to get stronger. I'm trying to get my jump shot consistent too because you know there's a huge difference from high school to the NBA three-point line. It's like me throwing the ball up there so it's a huge difference. I'm trying to adjust to that and get my shot consistent. (on if he thinks he can be as successful as other high school players in NBA) Yeah, because they've had the hype since they were younger. This is my fourth year really playing organized basketball so I'm just late coming onto the scene. I'm just going to keep on surprising people like I have been in the past. (on if he's signed with an agent) No, I'm leaving that option open in case I want to go to college. TREVOR ARIZA – 6-7, 194 lbs. UCLA (on how it went) I think it was good, competitive. Everybody was playing hard, fighting for their spot. (on what he's heard on his draft status) Nobody knows right now. Nobody's been to Chicago yet so after that, you'll pretty much know. (on what he thinks he'll bring to the NBA) Everybody that has a chance to go anywhere for a workout is good enough to play. It's just a matter of how hard you work at it and I feel I work pretty hard and everyone here works hard. It's a matter of who can separate themselves from the next person. (on what aspect of the game he excels in) Getting up and down the floor in the open court. Give the fans what they want to see. (on his relationship of Baron Davis) He raised me almost. My dad was in Florida and I was in L.A. and he just looked out for me ever since we were little. We just had a love for basketball and he took me under his wing and taught me a lot of stuff. (He's told me the biggest difference in the NBA) is mentally. You have to be mentally prepared for this because it's stressful, you're going from city to city, night to night and you've just got to be ready for it. ERNEST PORTER – 6-3 Southern University New Orleans (on the workout) I just enjoyed the chance that the whole Hornets organization gave me. I'm from a small school, Southern University in New Orleans, and I just enjoyed the workout that the Hornets gave me. I'm looking forward to playing somewhere when the NBA season breaks off. (on if he plans on pursuing more workouts) Yeah, but I'm trying to stay focused on one workout at a time. I don't know where my next one will be but hey I didn't know I was going to be invited to this one until the last second. I'm just looking forward to getting invited to as many camps as I can. (on how he was invited to the workout) The old saying is you have to know somebody to get somewhere....That's just what it is. You just have to know the right people and leave the rest to hope prayers and things will work through. I think he talked to my coach, Rickey Broussard and then it trickled down from there. (on what he can do to stand out) First of all, it's defense. I play great defense but I'll put my mid-range game near the top where my defense is too. My mid-range game and my defense should at least get me some looks and then it's on me to do it after that. BRAD BOYD – 6-6, 195 lbs. University of Louisiana – Lafayette (on how the workouts went) It went pretty good. From this experience, I know I need to get a little bit better with conditioning. It was a tough workout. It's the NBA, so it's the real deal. It's a great experience and I'm just happy to be here. (on getting the workout with the Hornets) I've got a pretty good agent. He made some contacts. Got a few of my college films out, a couple of games I did pretty well in. I'm a shooter and everybody needs a shooter on their team so they brought me in and I worked out. (on if shooting is his biggest strength) Yeah, that's definitely it. I'm not the fastest guy and I'm not going to jump the highest but I know the game of basketball and I can shoot so that pretty much equals out my strengths and weaknesses so that helps me out a lot. (on being local) Me and my ex-center from ULL we come to a lot of games out here and it's just a great atmosphere. I like how they play music during the game. I wish they did that for college. It's just relaxes you more out there. I'm amazed just looking at Baron Davis (who was shooting at the other end of the court) over there so I look up to those guys and it's a great experience. ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER ALLAN BRISTOW (on the large amount of players they've looked at and if guard is the team's focus) Well, usually we bring the players in after Chicago (pre-draft camp), but because of this year, Chicago's set back another week. We've had 20 players in so far and it gives us a good feel for at least the mid-range of where we are looking at drafting. We’ve got a lot of second-rounders that came in but we're really happy so far about the way our practice schedules have come together. (on if the draft is more important this year since there might be large turnover of players on the Hornets roster) You don't expect that to happen every year. We're trying to fill out our coaching staff, I know that and of course going through the procedures of interview with Byron and other candidates but now that we have our head coach in place, we've got to now concentrate on who we're going to get at 18 or 44 (in the Draft). I think we're set. We're ready for the stretch run here. After Chicago, we'll really hone in on exactly the handful of guys that are going to be candidates and whom we select from. (on the difference between individual workouts and the Chicago camps) There's a big difference. Here, you're up front and personal and you get to seem them sweat. You get to see how they react in different situations. In Chicago, you're more or less sitting up in the stands and you're 25-35 feet away and you've got 60 players down there on the floor. It's just one big camp whereas here you can concentrate on individual plays and really hone in on a player's skill and you're able to talk to them one-on-one for their interviews. (on if he's had his interview for the General Manager position) We're moving forward but nothing has been set. Again, we've been just so busy with this camp and with our workouts. I really haven't had time with the holiday. Whether it happens before Chicago or after, all we know is Bob Bass is going to be leaving by July 1st. on if they go into Chicago looking at or for anything in particular) Going into Chicago this year, we're going to have a good handle on about maybe 80 percent of the players that are there. It's that extra six or seven players you may have missed that come through a little bit and shine a little bit in Chicago and then you might have to factor them into the workouts and maybe into your draft pick. (on when they get a handle on what other teams may be looking for) I think it's a work in progress. I think you've got to continue to work on it week by week. But I think as the draft nears, you get a better handle. Sometimes it's a trade or something happens that throws a draft all around. Last year, we had it pretty well pegged all the way up until our pick and I think this year, it starts to get a little washed out around the 13th and 14th pick. Now, since we're picking 18, we've got to make sure we have a good handle of at least our top 18 players and I couldn't tell you who the top 18 are. I could probably tell you the top 13 or 14 but not the four other candidates. (on if they'll see more players after they get back from Chicago) You bet. I think we'll probably bring in, say, another 10. --
