2004 Draft Workouts: May 25, 2004
TONY ALLEN - 6-4, 213 lbs.
Oklahoma State University
(on where he's been)
This is the fifth place I've been. I've already been to Chicago,
Miami, the Lakers and the Clippers.
(on if the Hornets workout was different than the others)
Basically, they're the same workouts. They want to see your
vertical, your agility, 2-on-2 skills, how you defend, and how
you shoot.
(on the toughest part of the workouts)
The hardest part is the traveling....trying to get rest the night
before, just thinking how well you’re going to do the next day.
(on how much he thinks high schoolers have pushed his draft position
down)
That pushes me (down) looking at the fact that teams take those young
guys and use them as projects. I'm a guy with experience and I just
put everything in the grace of God. Hopefully, I'll get picked.
(on if he resents the presence of high school players)
I don't knock anybody. If you're good enough....individual workouts
will tell that and how they (the teams) judge. I'm ready to compete.
BRYANT MATTHEWS - 6-7, 215 lbs.
Virginia Tech University
(on his draft status)
I'm not paying attention to that right now. I just go into these
workouts and give my all and do the best I can do.
(on if the team expressed real interest or if it was just generic)
It's the nature of the beast. It's still early. Nobody's going to show
their hand. They're not going to tell the other teams what they found
and what they like. It's pretty much going to be kept a secret until
the draft and that's when everybody starts showing their hands.
(on if he's gotten advice on what to expect during the workout process)
I've talked to a few people. They just say go in there and give it your
all. All it takes is one team to like you, so just go out there and work
hard, show your work ethic and that you're willing to be coached.
ANTONIO BURKS - 6-0, 195 lbs.
University of Memphis
(on his college coach, former NBA coach John Calipari, giving him
pointers on his workouts)
Play the pick-and-roll real hard, just play hard throughout the entire
workout and just compete.
(on how much the workouts is all about endurance)
You really get tired from all the flying and stuff. Flying from place
to place so you've just got to rest up and eat right.
(on if he twisted his ankle)
My foot was really hurting before I came here. I cancelled my last two
workouts, Portland and Seattle, and tried to give it a go here but I
just couldn't make it through the whole workout.
(on if he'll take some time off to heal)
I think I won't be making it to Detroit, but I think I'll have to make
it to Cleveland. I really want to try to get ready for Chicago.
(on his draft status)
I think so far, I'm in the second round. But if I keep going through
these workouts and playing good for the top teams, I might push myself
into the late first round. All you've got to do is stay focused, go
into each workout and play hard and when you get the chance, just make
the best of it.
WAYNE TINSLEY - 6-5, 219 lbs.
Tulane University
(on if he gets any inspiration from former teammate and current NBA
player Linton Johnson)
I get a lot of inspiration, especially going to school with him. He
works so hard, it was almost impossible that he wasn't going to make
it. It was just a matter of time when. That just pushes me to do what
I can and play as hard as I can.
(on if he feels he comes from the same mold and circumstance as Johnson)
I think I play the game by doing more than just putting up numbers. I
think I go out there and I help my team and I think I can come out and
produce and that's what I'm going to do.
(on what he needs to improve to play at an NBA level)
Right now, I think it's my wind. That was a pretty tough workout. I'd
say towards the end, I didn't have my legs for my shot and I really
need to work on my conditioning for that.
(on where he's working out)
I'm still here (in New Orleans) working out with a couple of people. I
still haven't signed with an agent or anything like that. I'm just
looking around. This is actually my first NBA workout so I'll make the
best of it.
HORNETS VP OF BASKETBALL OPERATIONS/GENERAL MANAGER BOB BASS
(on if any of these players are first round prospects)
Tony Allen's got a good shot at it. They said he was the best perimeter
defender in the Big 12 and probably one of the top defenders in the
country. As a perimeter defender, he's real physical. He really runs
well and jumps well. I think if an NFL coach had been here, he'd be
working on him. With that body he's got, he'd make some kind of
defensive back.
(on comparing Johnson to Tinsley)
Litton could shoot a lot better than he could. (Tinsley) is real
physical. His game is mostly around the basket. We brought him in to
take a look at him.
(on when he saw David West last year, if he knew immediately that's the
kind of player he wanted)
What that workout told us last year about David West was that if he was
there at 18, we knew we were going to come out with a good player, if he
was there. He had a good enough workout, we thought he could help us and
that's the thing about the workouts. Yesterday, we had a couple of strong
candidates in here too so we'll just have to wait in see how it falls out.
(on if he is against picking a high school kid)
No, not if we can see a highly talented one. But usually the high school
players won't slip to 18 if they've got talent. About seven or eight
years ago, they would, but they won't anymore because everybody's tuned
in now to high school players and they look at them two or three years
down the road. The best case is that we would get a player than can help
us right now but if we saw a real talent then I think we'd definitely
have to think about taking him.
(on if the draft priority for the Hornets is to find a big two-guard)
That and I think a backup center. I feel like we've got a couple of
fours (power forwards) here in P.J. (Brown) and David West. That position
is in pretty good shape. We've got a starting center, but we need a
backup center. Like I said, we'd like to keep three centers if we can.
(on how many changes the roster needs to make the playoffs next season)
That's a tough question. If everybody came back in good health and we're
all ready to play, I think the team can make a run just like it is right
now.
(on the expansion draft and the protected list)
Yeah, we pretty much know. I'll go over with the owners on that and make
sure everybody's on the same page. We've got eight players under
contract and we've got Courtney Alexander who is a restricted free agent
so he's a player that we might want to protect.
(on bringing in a player with the mid-level exception)
The problem with that is that there are two or three guys on that list
that we would like but I would think the team would match. All we can do
is go up to the mid-level, so we've got to wait until that thing plays
out.
(on if the Hornets will move much on Draft Day or will they stay at 18)
I think we're probably going to stay where we are.
