Hornets majority owner George Shinn said the search to find a
replacement for Bob Bass, the team's executive vice president
of basketball operations and general manager who announced his
retirement Wednesday, will begin soon. But he imposed no
timetable on making a hire.
"It is a critical time," Shinn said at the press conference
announcing Bass' retirement.
"We've got a lot of work to do. We'll sit down and evaluate this.
We'll be looking for an individual who can help us. Our goal is
to get better. The way you do that is with good people."
One candidate Shinn won't have to gather information on is
assistant general manager Allan Bristow, who was hired to his
current position last summer.
From 1990 to 1996, Bristow was the Hornets' head coach, guiding
the team to its first 50-win season in 1994-95.
He was the vice president of basketball operations in 1990-91. He
had the same title with the Denver Nuggets in 1997-98.
"I think it's pretty obvious Allan is a candidate, and there's
other people who are candidates," Shinn said.
Shinn declined to name other candidates, but he said "we'll sit
down and evaluate all those at the proper time."
Bristow attended Wednesday's news conference at New Orleans Arena,
where Bass almost came to tears after reflecting on what his life
will be like without basketball after a career that spanned 54
years as a high school, college and pro coach and team executive.
Through Hornets spokesman Harold Kaufman, Bristow said he didn't
want to comment on anything other than Bass' retirement and the
celebration of his great career.
Bass also declined to field questions regarding the upcoming search.
Bass' retirement won't take affect until June 30. He will remain to
oversee the Hornets' draft selections June 24.
Bass also will be involved in the evaluation of Coach Tim Floyd and
his assistants, which Shinn said will occur in the coming weeks.
Also, Shinn will be evaluating whether to keep the same front office
structure -- with one man as executive vice president of basketball
operations and general manager -- or change it before hiring Bass'
replacement.
"That's something we're going to evaluate," Shinn said.
"I plan to look at the league set up, and each team how they're set
up and try to get some advice and counsel on the absolute best way
to do it."
Whomever the Hornets hire will have several major decisions to make,
including whether to trade disgruntled star forward Jamal Mashburn,
which players to leave available for the expansion draft and whether
the roster needs wholesale changes as the team moves to the more
competitive Western Conference next season.
