Heat seeks return to fast-break style

The Hornets might have kept the Heat to eight fast-break points
in Game 3 on Saturday, but Heat coach Stan Van Gundy believes
that statistic still doesn't tell the entire story of the Heat's
offensive struggles.
"There's no question that New Orleans made a very concerted
effort and did a great job of getting back and taking away our
fast breaks and making us set up and play the game," Van Gundy
said. "But we want to play the game at a little quicker pace. Even
if we don't have attacks in transition for layups, we'd like to
move the ball a little bit better and try to attack before their
defense is set."
So if the Hornets are once again successful at keeping the Heat from
running, Van Gundy wants his players to keep looking for early
offensive opportunities.
That didn't happen Saturday, and the result was Van Gundy's worst
fear: a game of one-on-five.
"I think what happened [Saturday] is when it got frustrating for us,
we had a lot of guys try to take over individually, and I think it
just led to more frustration," he said. "We haven't been that type of
team all year. When we try to play the game one-on-one, particularly
against big, physical teams like New Orleans, we are not very effective."
Still, the primary objective is to get a basket in transition. And
from the end of Saturday's game to the end of practice Sunday, Heat
players had the same thought: Run at any cost.
"We can't be afraid to make mistakes on the road," Dwyane Wade said.
HEAT HISTORY
If Caron Butler had his way, this season would never end. That's
because the second-year forward continues to improve as the season
progresses.
On Saturday, Butler had 24 points and 15 rebounds, becoming the first
player in Heat playoff history to record a 20-point, 15-rebound game.
His 15 rebounds were the most he has gotten in an NBA game, and it's
the fifth-highest total for a player in Heat postseason history.
Van Gundy said Butler's success was the result of the Hornets'
defensive scheme.
"I think what they've done is they really tried to use their [small
forwards] to help on our pick-and-roll game, to help on Lamar [Odom],
to help on Dwyane," Van Gundy said. "That guy is always in as a help
defender, so I think they've been willing, at least to this point in
the series, to live with Caron getting some points if they can take
our three leading scorers out.''
Butler did not practice Sunday because of a sore right Achilles.
Butler hurt his Achilles in the third quarter of Game 3 but played
through it. Butler said he will play Tuesday, and Van Gundy expects
him to practice today.
NO GOGGLES
Odom, who received six stitches in his left eye Saturday after Baron
Davis hit him with an inadvertent elbow, said he will not wear any
goggles or a protective mask in Game 4.
"If they hit me again . . . I'm just outta luck," Odom said. "But I
don't think they'll hit it again."
