Slashdot(簡稱/.) 是一個很受歡迎的資訊科技網站。它每天都會更新在主 頁的新聞數次。網站使用者可以對公佈在該站的新聞發表意見。通常在頭版 的新聞會有最少有70個意見。 較受觀迎的新聞可能會有上千的意見。在形 式上﹐Slashdot可以說是blog的一種。而所有的新聞都是由網站使用者自願 提供的。網站的編輯會把合適的新聞發表在主頁上面。該站的新聞主題也包 括電影和書籍的評論﹐訪問和 Ask Slashdot 該站的口號是"News for nerds. Stuff that matters." 它的新聞經常被批 評為失實或不準確。Slashdot 效應是指當成千上萬的Slashdot讀者連結到 某一在Slashdot公佈的網址時﹐該網址因特然的在站人數激增﹐而導致該站 癱瘓的情況。 正式說來，"Slashdot"這個名字是因著那些搞混此站URL位置發音 (h-t-t-p-colon-slash-slash-slash-dot-dot-org)的人而得。[1] 1997年，Slashdot在Rob Malda手中初創，現在Slashdot則屬於VA Software 底下的Open Source Technology Group所有。此站主要主要營運者有Malda 、Hemos、Bates(協助處理文章、保存回顧好文與銷售廣告者)，以及處理更 多站務、張貼文章的Robin "Roblimo" Miller(請參考Slashdot 的歷史)。 用以運作Slashdot的軟體被稱為Slash或slashcode，採用自由軟體基金會下 的GNU 通用公共許可證授權。在很多其他網站，其客製化變體版本被廣泛用 於處理網站論壇。 Slashdot的核心讀者群包括Linux與開放原始碼運動的狂熱份子，顯然也包 含支持Windows的讀者群。在一次Slashdot的投票中顯示有幾乎半數投票者 使用Microsoft Windows作業系統，三分之一使用Linux, MacOSX使用者則大 概佔了10%左右。但最有意思的可能在於一定數目的跨平臺使用者，也就是 不只使用一種上述提到之作業系統的使用者。[2] 如同大多數網際網路上的相似活動，Slashdot上的投票亦著名地不可信賴。 甚至蒐集來的瀏覽器類別資訊都較投票可靠，此結果顯示Microsoft的客戶 遠小於一般網際網路上的量，而Linux與Mac使用者則高出許多。然而，很多 Slashdot的訊息都與Microsoft Windows之遊戲、應用程式或是安全臭蟲有 關。關於Slashdot為Linux導向的臆測則因著名的 Bill Gates "Borg"圖示 不脛而走。此外，在判斷Slashdot使用者作業系統結果傾斜方面，一個事實 是很多Slashdot使用者在日常工作中接觸此網站，而在只有在家裡他們才使 用Linux。 著名的 "Slashdotters" 包含演員Wil Wheaton(使用者代號 "CleverNickName"), id Software的技術指導John Carmack (使用者代號 "John Carmack"), ReiserFS創始者Hans Reiser (使用者代號 "hansreiser")與開放原始碼的宣揚者Bruce Perens (使用者代號"Bruce Perens")。另外一些值得注意的人士是參予火星探勘計畫(rover exploration projects)的NASA工程師 。 Ars Technica: Technology and science news, typically with fewer stories but longer analysis and relevancy.
