O's will send Johnson or Saunders to face Rangers
金鶯將會推派Steve Johnson或Joe Saunders來跟遊騎兵打外卡殊死戰
Hours after their 4-1 loss to the Rays on Wednesday, the Orioles had not
named a starter for Friday's American League Wild Card matchup against the
Rangers, with Steve Johnson and Joe Saunders the two options for the
organization's first playoff game in 15 years.
Johnson threw a light bullpen session on Wednesday to test his sore left knee
and was deemed good to go after that. The right-handed rookie, who is 4-0
with a 2.11 ERA in 12 games (four starts), has never faced the Rangers.

Saunders, on the other hand, has, but it hasn't been good. The 31-year-old
lefty has a 6.48 ERA in 11 career starts against Texas, including a 9.38 ERA
in six games in Arlington.

Asked if Saunders was going to go on Friday, which would be his turn, manager
Buck Showalter said that Johnson is also a candidate.

"If we can win a game on Friday, [Jason Hammel] could be an option for us,"
Showalter said of the 30-year-old right-hander, who will take a work day in
Texas on Thursday and could start on Sunday if the O's advance to the
Division Series. "If you look at what's been going on all year, it's been the
sum of the pitching staff between Norfolk and Baltimore. We think our No. 1
starter is the guy that's pitching that night."
The Rangers will counter with Yu Darvish, who finished the regular season
16-9, with a 3.90 ERA in 29 starts and 191 1/3 innings pitched. He was fifth
in the AL in strikeouts, with 221, and opponents hit .220 off him, the
third-lowest average in the league.

"It's obvious from what they were willing to commit to him, they really liked
the return," Showalter said. "We'll have our work cut out for us."
The Orioles and Rangers ended the season with identical records, but Texas
has the head-to-head edge, going 5-2 against Baltimore. The Orioles were
outscored in those games, 56-24.
