Orioles' Gibbons Will Be Investigated By MICHAEL S. SCHMIDT Published: September 10, 2007 Major League Baseball said yesterday that it would investigate Baltimore Orioles outfielder Jay Gibbons for his connection to numerous shipments of performance-enhancing drugs. SI.com reported last night that Gibbons received shipments of steroids and human growth hormone from an Orlando, Fla.-based pharmacy that is being investigated by the Albany County district attorney’s office. It is not the first time Gibbons has been linked to performance-enhancing drugs. In 2006, The Los Angeles Times reported the existence of a document in which Gibbons had been named as someone who used banned substances by Jason Grimsley, a former relief pitcher who played for the Orioles from 2004 to 2005. The report was disputed by the United States attorney’s office in the Northern District of California for containing “significant inaccuracies.” SI.com reported that Gibbons was mailed two shipments of testosterone and six shipments of Genotropin, a brand name for human growth hormone, and two shipments of another hormone, between October 2003 and July 2005. Testosterone was banned by Major League Baseball in 2003. Human growth hormone was added to the list of banned substances in January 2005. Gibbons, according to SI.com, received a shipment in July of that year. Major League Baseball does not test for H.G.H. The prescriptions were processed by Signature Pharmacy, the Orlando-based pharmacy, and were written to Gibbons, SI.com said. The investigation of Signature Pharmacy, which has spanned two years, has resulted in the indictments of 22 people, with 9 convictions. No players have been charged. Major League Baseball announced Friday that it would investigate reports that linked St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Rick Ankiel and Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Troy Glaus to the purchases of performance-enhancing drugs from the same pharmacy.
