Of the religious traditions of late antiquity, paganism was the oldest. The use of the term paganism tends to make the historian uncomfortable, for a number of reasons . In the first place, it is employed to indicate religious beliefs and practices of almost unlimited variety, many of them unconnected in any meaningul sense to others also defined as manifestations of paganism .
