Ashley has come in for fierce criticism from Magpies fans following recent events at the North East club. The Toon supremo has been blamed by supporters for the departure of Kevin Keegan and fans staged vociferous protests against Ashley at last weekend's home clash with Hull. Just 24 hours after the protests Ashley confirmed his intention to sell the club with the 45-year-old believed to be in Dubai talking to prospective investors. Whelan, who like Ashley made his fortune in sports retail, believes his counterpart should never have bought Newcastle in the first place and admits he deserves all the criticism directed at him. "I know Mike Ashley quite well as I was running JJB when he was with Sports Direct, and he is a bit unusual," said Whelan. Different kettle of fish "He is a very good retailer, but at managing a football club, no. "Especially with him being a Tottenham supporter and then going up to Newcastle, a club that is a different kettle of fish to most in the land. "The fans up there eat, breathe and live for one thing, and that is Newcastle United. "Unless you put your whole heart into it, are a 100 per cent Geordie and are backing them, then they will give you some stick.
