'I wanted to plan out my coaching career more carefully, but once a chance like this comes around, it's hard to refuse', the new manager explained, stating one of the main objectives is to regain a level of 'attractivity' in the Dutch side. 'I think we all started out playing football for the fun of it. My desire is to make these young internationals regain that enjoyment. I want to play with initiative in a recognisable concept, with defenders helping out midfielders, so that forwards do not become isolated, as is the case so often in the modern day game.' 'In the time we won the European Championship in 1988 I for one only knew too well that we didn't always play good football. Often I was up against four or five defender, on my own. Believe me, that's not much fun at all. I still feel the Dutch side of 1974 played in a manner I would consider desirable. Cruijff's team dictated the game.' The best Dutch player in history has become somewhat of an advisor to the KNVB and will also be involved in Van Basten's and assistant Van 't Schip's coaching. Add in keepers trainer Stanley Menzo and second assistant Rob Witschge and the managerial staf has Ajax written all over it, a fact that will not have gone down well in rival Feyenoord's home town Rotterdam. 'I can understand that. But we set out to find guys we knew to work with. I'm not here to do politics and choose someone from the north and someone from the south just to keep everybody happy. Moreover, we feel Witschge and Menzo have enough experience in the national side, and are cut out for the job.' With his succession to Dick Advocaat Van Basten has obviously turned a new page in his career. After being kicked out of the game by Italian defenders, he turned his back to the game for a while, focussing on his golf. Only a couple of years back did he start his training course, picking up his papers over the summer. Last year he coached Ajax's second choice to a league title. 'Once the rumours started about a possible Holland-deal, John and I discussed the possibilities. He was very up-beat about the chance, but I initially had reservations. But now obviously I am delighted. Let's hope it will turn out for the best.' Van Basten immediately surprised the fans with the inclusion of a number of bright prospects for the provisional Holland squad that will face Sweden in august. New Arsenal man Van Persie and Feyenoord's new right wing Romeo Castelen have been named. Also Bosschaart and Kuyt's future has a tangerine tinge to it. Note: Reiziger, Stam, Frank de Boer, Ronald de Boer and Overmars have quit the Holland team.
