Bowden would later confirm what he said in an e-mail to MLB.com during Wednesday night's game between the Nationals and Giants. Cordero and the Nationals avoided arbitration this past offseason when Cordero agreed to terms to a one year, $6.2 million contract on Jan. 11. The Nationals were hoping that Cordero would be just as productive as he was the previous four-plus seasons, but he played in only six games because of a labrum tear in his right shoulder. Cordero had the surgery on July 8, and the team is hoping that he is ready for Spring Training. While the Nationals would like to have Cordero back, Bowden said the team does not want to pay him a lot of money. "We hope that Chad Cordero re-signs with us, but based on his surgery, our interest would be a low base salary with incentives," Bowden said via e-mail. When reached by phone, Cordero was not happy to hear the news. "I'm shocked he would say it now and make it official. It's a bit upsetting. It's early," Cordero said. "I understand that it's a business." Cordero, who lives in Southern California, is planning to visit the Nationals on Saturday at Dodger Stadium. --
