(AP) MONTREAL -- The Expos learned after Saturday's game that Orlando Hernandez will be out three to four months because of a small tear in his right rotator cuff. He will have arthroscopic surgery on the shoulder on Monday in Miami. Dr. John Uribe will perform the procedure. The bad news comes after El Duque pitched an extended Spring Training game against the Mets on Thursday. He pitched 7 1/3 innings, striking out 10 batters and giving up one run on two hits. According to Expos general manager Omar Minaya, El Duque is expected to return sometime in August, but there is a possibility that he could be out for the year. "We tried the rehab approach and we just felt that if you look at it from a career perspective, it was better to take this course than to have him come back here and feel some pain after he pitched," Minaya said. "He felt that it was better for him to get this (operation) taken care of. He might be able join us before the year is out." El Duque was first diagnosed with rotator cuff tendinitis after pitching against the Cleveland Indians on March 13. He traveled with the team during the regular season and even had some successful simulated games. It went so well that he went to Florida to pitch in three rehab games. "He's disappointed," Minaya said. "He wants to be able to pitch. He wants to be part of the team right now. The team is doing well, but the main thing, he wants to get (the operation) over with." El Duque isn't the only pitcher who is having arm problems. Starter Tony Armas Jr., who has a strained right rotator cuff, is "coming along slow, very slow," according to Minaya. The team still doesn't don't know if the injury is worse than it had thought. "We are still evaluating," Minaya said.
