On the one-year anniversary of Tommy’s learning that his cancer was in remission, the Yankees invited him to the Stadium. He had acute myeloid leukemia and was hospitalized for several months as he underwent aggressive chemotherapy. While Tommy was shy and kept his Yankees cap tugged tight over his eyes, he turned animated once Jeter asked him to play catch. Belsky made about three tosses to Cano, growing more confident with each throw. He seemed surprised when the two Yankees continued warming up without him. “This is beyond words,” said Tom Belsky, the boy’s father. “This is a dream come true for a son and for a dad.” Tommy, who lives in Hopewell, N.J., wore a Jeter jersey and was treated royally by the players. Nick Swisher taught Tommy a special handshake and hugged him. Jorge Posada gave Tommy insight about catching. Andy Pettitte crouched down to be at Tommy’s eye level.
