The lobby gossip last night was about the Yankees, who reportedly met with CC Sabathia somewhere within the city limits, face-to-face. Indications are that Sabathia's agent, Greg Genske, asked for the meeting and not Brian Cashman, and perhaps the Yankees should take that as a positive sign that at least the $140 million offer could be talked about in this setting. Then again, it appears that Genske and Sabathia will also engage some face time with the Red Sox before Sabathia heads back to California. Boston isn't considered a major player for Sabathia and the landscape hasn't changed much - if the Giants or Dodgers want to jump in the deep end with Sabathia, he'd probably love that. But the dollars don't seem to be there, and the Angels - who have the cash - would rather retain Mark Teixeira. That's where we are. Hours after assorted people collecting paychecks from big league clubs scattered the casino floor - saw one New York club employee who shall not be named killing a blackjack table last night - the sun is coming up on the Strip and I'm about to head downstairs to get this day going. Scrap that Robinson Cano for Matt Kemp rumor. By the way, this place is a labyrinth. It feels like a half mile walk from the lobby to the conference room set up for the media. Since there's no leaving the Bellagio for fear of missing something, today's lunch choice is a $14.99 ahi tuna salad. 5:15 p.m. ET: Just ran into Joe Girardi on his way back from working out in the $25/day Bellagio gym. Here's a few snippets from the story I just filed for MLB.com: "We had a very good meeting," Girardi said on Monday. "I was encouraged. That doesn't necessarily mean 100 percent that he's coming here, but I was encouraged and I thought it was a positive meeting." A source with knowledge of the situation said that Sabathia is likely waiting to see if a West Coast team will become involved before he makes a final decision. However, following the meeting with Sabathia and agent Greg Genske, Girardi said that his sense was that Sabathia was "absolutely" interested in New York. "I just think, when I look at CC, I look at a guy that has three young kids and he's trying to make the decision that is best for his family," Girardi said. "He's not going to rush into it. You wait a long time to become a free agent and there's no reason to jump the first week, just like every player does." 5:18 p.m. ET: What do you make of this? Sabathia didn't even attend his sitdown with the Brewers, leaving it to his three agents. With the Giants only loosely involved, the Yankees may be Sabathia's only serious choice. It's like the whole market is waiting for CC to sign so things can get moving, and why not? A.J. Burnett would be nuts to sign before he knows what the market values Sabathia at. Brian Cashman will meet with the Yankees' beat reporters at 6 p.m. ET. 5:27 p.m. ET: This from George M. Steinbrenner's public relations firm: "As a young man in Cleveland, I remember what a spectacular ballplayer Joe Gordon was. He was a great second baseman, a great Yankee and an inspiration to millions of Americans for many years. The Yankees are proud of his election." 7:39 p.m. ET: Brian Cashman met with CC Sabathia again today over at the Wynn Las Vegas, where the lefty had a room. This was a followup of less than an hour as Sabathia asked a few more followup questions of Cashman before heading to other meetings.
