If the Yanks sign Sabathia, Teixiera, Burnett and Ramirez, it would add approximately $88 million to the $140 million they have committed to their returning players. That $228 million wouldn't include Mike Mussina and Andy Pettitte returning. If both do, that would add $30-35 million, bringing the total payroll over $250 million. So, should the Yanks commit that much money to bring in all those players? Absolutely not. First, there's no guarantee that this would work. More importantly, especially about adding both of those free agent pitchers, the Yanks would be potentially adding about 12 years in contracts and perhaps $200 million for two pitchers, one of which has had consistent injury problems. So this plan just doesn't make sense. Do the Yanks have to spend money? Yes. So should they spend money indiscriminately? No. Brian Cashman is calculated -- sometimes to a fault, as we can look back and see on the Johan deal -- but it's mostly been beneficial. Without Cashman's calculated decision-making, the Yanks wouldn't have the financial flexibility for this -- and subsequent -- offseasons. Cashman has put the team in a position to spend freely again. But that doesn't mean that he should go around spending money where it doesn't make sense. Yes, the Yanks could use an outfielder, but Manny? He's a pure hitter, but what about the cameras around New York? Because face it, New York's just bigger than Boston. What about when he dogs it and hears the boos? Boston may have thought it funny for some time, but Yanks fans will have no patience. What Lupica doesn't seem to know is that the plan to "fix" the Yankees -- the 89-win Yankees -- is already in place. It involves a little bit of spending -- Burnett or Sabathia, but not really both -- and the switch-hitting Teixeira would be a wonderful luxury -- but the plan also involves patience and the farm system. So, Mike Cameron as a stopgap is the latest rumor? Despite the tendency of fans -- this includes my brother yesterday, who indicated that there's "no room" for Cameron -- to dismiss Cameron as a "Mets reject", there are much, much worse ideas. The Yanks would get much-improved defense in center at a low cost, and a guy with a surprisingly good 110 OPS+. People were a little too quick to look at his age and batting average, but a closer look at the numbers shows that he'd fill out the outfield nicely while the Yanks wait for Austin Jackson. Cameron has hit 20+ homers in the NL for three consecutive seasons and can still steal around 20 bases.
