Brian Cashman, the team's GM since 1998, has promised to resolve his status "sooner rather than later," which would presumably mean this week. Cashman, whose contract expires Oct. 31, did not return a call for comment Monday. But as recently as last weekend, he was telling people it was still a toss-up whether he'd return. Cashman is intrigued by the GM opening in Seattle (he has never worked for a team other than the Yankees) and also frustrated by now reporting to multiple members of the Steinbrenner family rather than just patriarch George. Then again, Cashman seems committed to the restructuring of the Yankees organization, with an emphasis on player development. And on Sunday, he was communicating normally with employees, showing as much interest as usual in Yankees matters. "I'm keeping my fingers crossed," manager Joe Girardi said Monday in a wrap-up news conference. "I believe in Brian, and I think he's been a huge part of this organization, and I want him to come back. But that's his decision. "I think it'll be (decided) shortly." NOTES Starting pitching will be the priority over the winter, Girardi said, and only one spot in the rotation is set: Chien-Ming Wang's. That could double if Andy Pettitte returns; Mike Mussina seems to be leaning toward retirement. "I think Andy will continue to pitch," Girardi said. "I can't tell you that about Mike Mussina. I'm not sure what he's going to do." Pettitte's family is in favor of his continuing to play, he said, but he needs to decide if he wants to continue the grind. "Hopefully I come to a decision pretty quick," the 36-year-old Pettitte said. "It's more just me, if I feel I can do it and if I feel I want to do it again. It's been a hard year. It's been a long, hard year for me." Pettitte went 14-14, losing seven of his final nine decisions and posting a 6.23 ERA over his final 11 starts. With free agents such as CC Sabathia and (possibly) A.J. Burnett on the market, the Yankees could build a veteran rotation and force younger pitchers such as Phil Hughes, Ian Kennedy and Alfredo Aceves to earn spots. "I think there will be a concerted effort to have more experience on our staff," Girardi said. "We have to add, probably, a few people to the rotation." Closer Mariano Rivera has opted for surgery to remove a calcification from the AC joint in his right shoulder. Rivera pitched with on-and-off shoulder discomfort all year but still earned 39 saves in 40 chances. "I just think he feels more comfortable getting it done," Girardi said, "and then it's not an issue next year." Rivera's other option was rest and anti-inflammatory injections when the shoulder flares up. The team said it would announce a date and a surgeon soon. Hideki Matsui, who had surgery Sept. 22 to repair cartilage in his left knee, said he will be able to run within 2-3 months. He underwent similar surgery on his right knee in November 2007 and was behind a bit this year in spring training. "I should be in much better condition" next spring, he said through interpreter Roger Kahlon. Catcher Jose Molina will undergo PRK laser-eye surgery in the coming weeks so he can see without contact lenses.
