What he finds is that very few pitchers finished gracefully. Here’s a small sample: – Jim Palmer was 0-3, 9.17 in 1984 – Bob Gibson was 3-10, 5.04 in 1975 – Bob Feller was 0-4, 4.97 in 1956 Mussina passed all of those Cooperstown greats on the career wins list this season. And here’s how he did over all in 2008: 20-9, 3.37. Listening to Mussina this weekend, and talking with him all season, I believe he will retire. I think Mussina’s head guides his heart, and his head has spelled out a lot of rational reasons to retire. He’ll be 40 in December, and he has 270 wins. If he is healthy for one more season, he’ll probably exceed 280. At that point, he said, there would be no turning back. He’d have to get 300, and that would mean pitching in 2010 and 2011, too. “If I’m in for one, I’m in for three,” Mussina said. “That’s basically what the decision is. Now, where? I’m not going to bounce around from one team to another. I don’t want to do that. I’ve been lucky enough to play for two teams for 18 seasons, and I’m not going to bounce around to try to scratch something out that still may never happen.” For Mussina, there seems to be a strong appeal in going out on his terms, as a 20-game winner, and spending the rest of his life in his beloved home of Montoursville, Pa. He has a wife and three children and has lived in the same town all his life. “Ninety-nine percent of the players do not get to make that choice for themselves,” Mussina said. “They play the game, and somebody else tells them that it’s time to go. I’ve been really lucky. I’m at a situation where, if I decide enough’s enough, I get to decide for myself.” In other words, Mussina can retire from baseball, without baseball retiring him. That seemed to be his fate after last season, when he struggled to a 5.15 E.R.A., and even this year, when he lost three of his first four starts. He believed he needed to win in Chicago on April 23 or lose his spot in the rotation. “I was worried about my spot on February 15, and for two months, it really didn’t change that much,” Mussina said. “But since, honestly, nobody jumped up and was in a position to take it from me, and we weren’t playing very well as a group, Joe kept giving me the ball and things got better.” Mussina did it by pitching inside more, by dialing down the velocity of some off-speed pitches, and by having extraordinary luck with his health. And if he never comes back, he will have finished with a flourish: his first 20-win season. “I think it’d be pretty cool,” Mussina said. “I don’t know what everybody else thinks, but I think it’d be pretty cool.” --
