He talked openly and honestly about benching Cano, Joba, the clubhouse, Posada, etc. Unfortunately, with my regular laptop being repaired I don’t have the ability to post the audio. But watch the YES pregame. Hopefully this is a sign that Joe realizes that his style with the media wasn ’t working and he’s willing to say what he really thinks. It’s important for the manager, especially in New York, to have credibility. Whether you like the media or not, we’re a conduit to the fans and what the manager says and how he says is important. The highlights of what he said: On Cano: “We don’t want what happened yesterday to happen again. Obviously, Robbie’s had a year that has been difficult on him. He’s a guy who’s used to hitting .300 and being successful. … You have to figure out how to play the game the same way no matter what the result is. There was just no effort after the ball (on Sunday). … That there was no effort on the ball is what really upset me.” On Joba: “It’s something we’re going to discuss during the offseason but we envision him as a starter.” UPDATE, 4:47 p.m.: Girardi said Jorge Posada was free to have an opinion on Joba. He’s right about that. Posada talked with writers today when he was in Manhattan for the YES taping. I think many of us, media included, have underestimated the impact of Posada’ s absence this season. Not just the fact that he is one of the best catchers in the game but that he is an opinionated, emotional guy. The writers would not have been around to see it, but I believe Posada would have jacked Cano up about two months ago. But when a guy is hurt, he cant really be that kind of leader.
