After Cano batted .306 with 19 home runs and 97 runs batted in a year ago, he was hitting .263 with 11 and 56 after Friday’s game. Coincidence or not, Larry Bowa, the third base coach who was not afraid to challenge Cano, is no longer with the Yankees. “I got in his face,” said Bowa, who is now the third base coach with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Bowa said he used “tough love” to get through to Cano, who he called a good kid and a good player. But Bowa emphasized that the key to coaching Cano was to not tell him only what he wanted to hear. Bowa said he told Cano when he was good and when he was bad, an honest approach that eventually worked. Still, Bowa had some trying times with Cano. He explained how Cano once stopped at third base while Bowa was waving him home. When Bowa confronted Cano, Cano told him the outfielder had a good arm. Bowa was furious and told Cano he could play second base and coach third, too. The two did not speak for a week. After Tony Pena, the first base coach, asked Bowa to talk to Cano because the silence was bothering Cano, Bowa told Pena that Cano needed to initiate the conversation. Cano did and the two men resumed their close relationship. At the end of last season, Cano gave Bowa a watch as a thank-you gift for what he had done. Bowa said he did not care about the watch, but he cared about what it symbolized: he had made an impact on Cano. But, less than one year later, Cano looks like he could use Bowa, or someone like him, again. --
