KING III June 24, 2008 -- Dropping him into the clubhouse might prove to be too much of a challenge, but there is a chance Carl "American Idle" Pavano could be ready to pitch for the Yankees before Phil Hughes . "I haven't asked, but it's possible," GM Brian Cashman said last night. "Pavano should be ready by August and Hughes in August." Considering Pavano, who is trying to rebound from last year's Tommy John surgery, is throwing curveballs off a mound and Hughes (fractured rib) isn't even on a mound, Pavano would be considered ahead of Hughes. "The rehabs are different," Cashman said. "Phil Hughes will start throwing from flat ground, but it won't be as long (as Pavano's)." Pavano is in the fourth and final year of a $40 million contract that has been dominated by injuries that have limited him to 19 games and teammates not believing he was as hurt as he said he was at times. Pavano appeared in two games at the start of last year and hasn't pitched since. * If Kyle Farnsworth 's injured right hand - he needed three stitches to close a gash between the ring finger and pinky Sunday - keeps him from pitching and the Yankees need bullpen help it will likely be right-hander David Robertson, who has dominated at Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. * In what appears to be nothing more than a paperwork move, the Yankees moved Sidney Ponson from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to Double-A Trenton yesterday. The move was made to make room for pitcher J.B. Cox's return from the DL to SWB. With a roster spot open in Trenton, Ponson was assigned to the Thunder. Ponson, who will pitch one of the two games against the Mets on Friday, is expected to throw a bullpen with SWB and report to the Yankees later this week. --
