Which is too bad, because the day belonged to Chien-Ming Wang and Melky Cabrera. The Wanger threw seven shutout innings and the Melkman homered off C.C. Sabathia for the game’s only run. Some fans think the vaunted Yankees youth movement started with Phil Hughes, Joba Chamberlain and Ian Kennedy. It really started back in 2005 when Wang and Robbie Cano made their debut in the same week. Cabrera continued the trend when he made the squad out of spring training in 2006. All Wang has done is gone 43-13, 3.63 since the start of the 2006 season. Cano became an All-Star. Cabrera forced his way into the lineup and knocked Johnny Damon out of center field. It’s a popular theory among some Yankees fans that Austin Jackson (or Brett Gardner) will be the center fielder in a few years. Not so fast. Cabrera is hitting .291 and leads the team with five home runs, three fewer then he hit all last season. His OBP is .356. Perhaps Jackson should take a look at left field. By following A-Rod’s workout routine, Melky has gotten stronger and more fit. He’s only 23 and his power is just starting to develop. That he was able to knock one out against Sabathia should tell you something. Melky did an interview with the media today with his buddy Cano translating. Melky can speak plenty of English but is shy when a large group gets around him, which is certainly understandable. A few writers teased him a little, asking about his Manny Ramirez pose at the plate when he hit the homer. Cano found it funny but Melky just stood his head and walked away.
