That was the crux of the Yankees’ stance that they could not chase Rodriguez without the $30 million remaining from Texas to help pay for the last three years of the deal. “I can’t help the contract that Texas made with Alex,” Hank Steinbrenner said tonight. “That wasn’t our doing. At the time, it was a much-abused contract when it was done — way out of whack with everything else in baseball.” * The idea of Joe Torre as the manager of the Dodgers and Don Mattingly as the hitting coach makes too much sense not to happen. Besides all the baseball reasons, there are cosmic forces at play: Torre grew up in Brooklyn, and Mattingly’s son, Preston, plays for a Dodgers’ farm team. * Rodriguez’s decision to make his announcement during the World Series has even furthered his reputation as an enemy in Boston, where Red Sox fans are said to be furious that A-Rod would try to steal some of the limelight on the night when they clinched the World Series. Major League Baseball is mad, too, and Rodriguez only deepened the perception that he believes he is bigger than the game. That is a shame, in a way, because Rodriguez truly cares about getting the most of his potential and honoring the game by his effort. But the timing was appalling to many. * Tony Pena is a class act, and you would have to think he is a candidate to be the bench coach for Joe Girardi. Here is what Pena said tonight when we talked about losing out to Girardi for the managing job: “I’m not disappointed. I met with Brian (Cashman), and I told him that whatever he decides, he’s going to make the right decision.” * Andy Pettitte is now on the clock. Pettitte must decide within 10 days whether to exercise his $16 million option for 2008. “We haven’t talked yet, but we will,” the agent Randy Hendricks said tonight. It would not be surprising to see another player option added to his deal, a sign of good faith between the Yankees and Pettitte. * If I had A-Rod’s phone number, I would ask him why he did not return calls from Hank and Hal Steinbrenner before he decided to opt out. In what other line of work does the highest-paid person in an industry refuse the calls of the people who pay his salary, especially when they are calling to offer him even more? * I have no idea how much he has left, and he will be 35 years old in spring training. But guess who is a free agent third baseman with a lot of goodwill built up with the Yankees? Aaron Boone. Saw him at the World Series and he said he is physically ready for 2008.
