Regardless of that, tonight’s performance was obviously not the way the Yankees wanted to start things off. This was supposed to be a pitchers duel between the 19-game winners C.C. Sabathia and Chien Ming-Wang. Wang didn’t have his signature sinker working tonight. But the way the Indians were swinging the bat, it may not have mattered who was on the mound. The Indians had 14 hits off of four different Yankee pitchers. However, there are some things to ponder that may have affected the outcome of the game. Was is wise of Joe Torre to go with Russ Ohlendorf, a rookie with only 6 career appearances in the majors, with the game still in reach at 7-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning? And had the Yankees gotten a clutch hit with the bases loaded and one out in the top of the fifth, would the momentum swing been enough to keep the Indians at bay? The Yankees turn to Andy Pettitte for game two while Indians will go with their other 19-game winner, Fausto Carmona.
